Cape Wrath
The Cape Wrath Hotel, who manage these lochs, is in the village of Durness
which is situated on the very Northwest corner of Scotland. The lochs are for
hotel guests but some permits may be available for the visitor. All the lochs are
fly only, and boats are available for hire.
The lochs can be found on OS Map 9 "Cape Wrath" 1:50,000 series.
THE LOCHS
-
Borralie:-
This loch lies at the back of the hotel. It is a large loch with an
island about half way down. Casting from the bank is fairly easy, but the
water is usually crystal clear so you have to be wary of scaring any fish
lying near the bank. The fish in these lochs are very silvery with lots
of black spots, more like sea trout than browns, they also grow very big
with a 2lb trout being a small one so fish with a stronger tippet than
usual.
-
Lanlish:-
Situated on the golf course this small loch holds some of the biggest
fish, with fish under 2 lbs to be returned to the water. The wind in this
corner of Scotland can be very strong and this loch with its open aspect
can be difficult to fish, but it is worth the effort when you hook up to
a fighting powerhouse that will take all your skill to land.
-
Croispol:-
You can look down on this loch from the road leading to Balnakeil Bay.
The water is very clear and the weed on the bottom can be clearly seen
from the boat with the bolt holes of the trout dotted here and there. A
very demanding loch to fish.
